Dunlop Supercars and Formula Vee head Mondello Event
The Dunlop Supercar championship and Formula Vee head the list of classes scheduled for this Sunday's Irish Motor Racing Club race meeting at Mondello Park. The Supercars will take top billing amongst the saloon classes while the only single seater action will be a pair of races for the budget Formula Vee class.
With the start of their season delayed by the late arrival of the new upgraded engine being used this season, the Supercars are having only their second event of 2008. A twelve car grid may be short on quantity but quality will not be a problem as the grid includes three past champions and a number of other race winners. John Whelan currently leads from 2007 champ Rod McGovern and former Formula 3 racer Ronayne O'Mahony in the championship standings without winning a race and will be out to put that right this weekend.
The ever competitive Formula Vee grid will as usual require a qualification race to decide the make up of the grid. Paul Sammin and Ken Elliott head the entry list as the only drivers to have won so far this season. Sammin leads the championship form Brian Kelly and Trevor Delaney with Elliott making up ground following a non-finish at round two. Other likely winners include Robbie Allen and Robert Casey but there are many more contenders among the thirty five strong field.
The remainder of Sunday's races will be contested by saloons with the occasional sports car thrown in. Two races for the growing Mondello Park Saloon Car Challenge, single races for Fiat Punto's, Fiat Uno's and Historics, and the latest round of the Mondello Park Time Attack series fill out the eleven race programme.
